In fact, we always interact with the space, when you see a door, you may guess what will hide behind it, you may knock it or just open it, usually there will be another space, normally a room, or staircase. However, if you see a cliff through the door, it is surely beyond expectation, so here, the door give you a message that there may be a room behind it or you might see the outside the building(when it is the ground floor, otherwise it will be weird again), or corridor, whatever except something like another door, or children¡¯s slide, because it seem to be abnormal, to explain this kind of situation, I think we can just get some idea from Claude Elwood Shannon¡®s book, which in mathematically speaking, convey the rule of information transfer, to a language extent, say if you type the word ¡°the¡±, your freedom of choice with respect to the next word will be limited: a noun must almost certainly come next. Nonetheless, space or architecture is not language, although we have rules there to secure the safety and function, and the other technical problems, the ¡°after door¡± law is not a strictly fixed one, we can just break it when we have a good reason. So I think it is still possible to put a basketball basket behind the window, you drop the ball into it and it will let garage door open. So there is a interaction then.
The interaction we are talking about now, is both in your mind and behavior, (invisible and visible or audible), when the interaction is extremely invisible, for example, when you are dashing in the subway corridor or underpass, you may see a lot of people and advertisement along your way, but you have no time to react, maybe you get some idea or frown to express your displeasure, but to the most extent, people at that moment are low in participation in this space, just as the hot media, like radio, you always listen to it but there is no access or chance to answer, however, there are also some space, you talk with them like the telephone, I have to say, the space is meaningless without the experience of you or your reactions. If we can use the communication theory again, we call it cool space, something there left for you to complete, like the basketball basket and the button, it is a silly example though, if you don¡¯t throw the ball into the basket, these two have no relationship nor meaning, to some degree. So I think the definition of the interactive space is strongly correlated with the interactive art, there is always something left for the people or the nature to change.
