Jaap van Triest

Guest Lecturer
Jaap van Triest (1957) studied graphic design in Arnhem. An editorial designer from the start, he graduated in 1981 as the designer of Panorama van de avant-gardes, a volume on architecture movements, and with a privately published visual essay Auto – over de Citroën DS.

He then settled in Amsterdam for a brief course in art history, and the design of Forum architectural quarterly (with Evert Bloemsma), and later Vormberichten magazine of the designer’s organisation BNO. He designed numerous publications in collaboration with visual artists, architects, and for KPN (publications on stamps, phone designs, phone cards). Several designs won him the ‘best verzorgde boeken’ award, among which Haute Culture for Gasunie (1998) and the designer monographs he made in collaboration with Karel Martens: Karel Martens Printed MatterDrukwerk (with Robin Kinross, 1996) and Wim Crouwel – Mode en module (with Frederike Huygen, 1997). Karel Martens Printed MatterDrukwerk was awarded the Goldene Letter in Leipzig.

Working with TU Delft Faculty of Architecture he designed Architecture in the Netherlands, a chronology 1900-2000 (Saõ Paolo Architecture Biennial 1999); the books LessenLessons on architectural education in the Netherlands, compiled with Madeleine Steigenga and Dirk van den Heuvel (SUN 2003); the voluminous Team 10  1953-1981 – in search of a Utopia of the present with professor Max Risselada and Dirk van den Heuvel (2005), and Steden vol ruimteCities full of space, with architects Rudy Uytenhaak and Jeroen Mensink (2008).

With Bob Winkler and professor Joan Hemels, he initiated and compiled Rollenrotatiedruk in Nederland 1950-2004, an illustrated account of newspaper and magazine web printing in the Netherlands – his contribution ‘Advertenties verzamelen’ describes the advent of colour and the general appearance of mass printed matter (2005).

Next to his design practice Jaap van Triest teaches graphic design and typography and works as an editor-designer for the research groups of visual rhetoric, photography and visual arts of AKV|St.Joost in Breda and Den Bosch – he designed the essay Germany since 1945 through the eyes of Dutch photographers by photography researcher Flip Bool and, with artist Joke Robaard, a visual essay on how art is used in fashion campains. Jaap van Triest guest teaches at the departments of Editorial Design and Fashion Communication of MAHKU, Utrecht.

With Sybrand Zijlstra he published an essay on ‘printers, designers and progress’ (Galeislaven en rekentuig – drukkers, ontwerpers en de vooruitgang, 1997), evaluating graphic design as well as printer’s goodwill publications relevant to its history. In the publication Loodvrij en digitaal (Alfabase 2001) an account of the design quality commissioned by publishers Samson and Sijthoff is followed by his essay ‘Regelzetters en monotypisten’, on the rise and impact of typesetting machines at the end of the 19th century. In addition – as a tribute to his friend Evert Bloemsma and using his Legato typeface – he compiled ‘Keys’ in Made with FontFont (2006).

In preparation: 3rd edition of Karel Martens Printed MatterDrukwerk; a chronology on the work of the Brazilian architect Lelé, and designer monographs on Jurriaan Schrofer and Evert Bloemsma.
